Yours truly is the youngest (and newest) member of the Maplewood Lions club. The Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service organization, founded in 1917.
In a strange bit of irony, 2 months after I joined I recieved a scrap book (seen here) from my grandmother. In it, she details her own journey to America with the rotary convention hosted by the Lions International in Havana, Cuba. Her husband (Lester, seen here) was “ViceConsel de los esta dos Estados Unidos” - meaning he drank beer on the beach all day then married a hot young Cuban to take home to Texas. Also according to this page, Lester, who died a decade ago, was president of the Optimist Club. Hmm. Not bad.
